This list is from the Federal Government guidelines. Hopefully we’ll never need any of these things but as any scout knows, its better to be prepared.



National Emergency Sitation

Battery-operated radio (extra batteries)
Battery-operated NOAA weather radio with tone alert
Recently charged cell phone
2 working flashlights (extra batteries)
3 gallons of bottled water per person and pet
Can opener
First aid kit
Whistle to signal for help
Dust masks (1 per family member)
Plastic sheeting and duct tape (may be needed to filter air)
Moist towelettes, garbage bags, paper towels for personal hygiene
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Local maps

Copies of important family documents (keep in locked secure location)

                Insurance documents, financial documents
                Social security cards
                Driver’s licenses, passports, birth certificates
                List of home and cell phone numbers of family/friends

Tentative evacuation plans and meeting places for family members

Food that does not need to be refrigerated/cooked to last 3 days
Examples include:

  • Balance bars
  • Cold cereals
  • Canned fruit/applesauce
  • Peanut butter/jelly/bread
  • Crackers/snacks
  • Juice bottles/water bottles
