Get free credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com once a year.

Establish/contribute to IRA/Roth/401K accounts
Establish/contribute to 529 plans (for education)

Make copy of all credit cards in wallet.

List frequent flyer information.

Keep the following originals in a safe deposit box:

  • Social security cards/birth certificates/marriage certificates
  • Passports, Deed to house/mortgage information
  • Car ownership papers
  • Insurance documents
  • Adoption papers/naturalization papers
  • Military documents (discharge papers)

Keep copies of all above at home in a secure locked location.
Tell a trusted family member or lawyer location of safe deposit key.

Keep checks, previous years’ tax returns and bank statements in a safe and hidden location.

Make an inventory of all valuables:

  • Jewelry
  • art
  • stamp and coin collections
  • equipment

Take photos of each item.
Keep inventory list and photos in a secure locked location.
